In Remembrance of Ed Casmer

We are deeply saddened to share that Ed Casmer, Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Cloud Storage Security (CSS), passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

Ed was more than just a colleague - he was a dear friend with an unbridled, infectious enthusiasm for life. He is beloved by all who knew him and he will truly be missed.

Despite developing heart failure in 2018 and receiving a heart transplant in 2019, Ed joined forces with Aaron Newman, Founder and Chair of the Board, to found Cloud Storage Security in March 2020. He was compelled to provide an easy-to-use solution that answered a complicated and often-asked question: "How can I ensure the security of the data I store in the cloud?" while creating a lasting legacy for his family.

Ed’s visionary leadership and industry experience were instrumental in shaping CSS’s data security platform. In just three and a half years, CSS has located and scanned over 5 billion files totaling petabytes of data, found over 50,000 pieces of malware, and brought peace of mind to nearly 500 customers across the world through its malware detection, sensitive data discovery, and storage assessment offerings.

He was as much a listener as he was a mentor. A completely distributed and virtual workforce didn’t feel isolating because Ed’s outgoing personality brought warmth and humanity to meetings.

His unparalleled dedication and commitment to excellence remain woven into the fabric of our company's DNA. His larger than life personality, passion for the work, and investment in everyone at CSS continues to inspire and drive the team. CSS’s strong foundation and highly trained, experienced staff wouldn’t be what they are if not for Ed's guidance; he left the company in a position to excel and the product with the ability to deliver.

CSS remains committed to its customers, partners, and stakeholders as we build the company's future. We can think of no better way to honor Ed’s legacy than by ensuring business continuity, upholding existing agreements, and fulfilling our commitments. Customers and partners can expect the same high level of service they are used to.

Together, and with input from the board, Ed and Steven Hess, CEO, built a joint vision for CSS’s continued growth, and that strategy has been fully vetted, communicated, and was well underway prior to September 17. Steven will assume responsibility for Ed’s leadership duties with the continued support of the board and investors. The core team supporting day-to-day operations remains intact. We will thoughtfully evaluate any future changes in line with our planned efforts to scale and grow the company.

Ed’s extraordinary spirit will live on through the work he accomplished at Cloud Storage Security and through all the lives he touched.
